For 36 years this prestigious forum gathers the National Societies from the Balkan Peninsula, to examine and discuss hot topics of common interest and highly important for the region – expanding the partnership under different social and health programmes, cooperation in case of emergencies, popularization of the norms of humanitarian law, cooperation in resolving the problems of migrants and refugees. The host of the 16th Balkan Conference of RCRC Societies was the Bulgarian Red Cross. During the three day period, the delegates had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the best practices of their colleagues from different fields of work – volunteer management, mobilization of resources, programmes ofr supporting the elderly, support in social adaptation of migrants and refugees and others. During the discussions the participants examined the more common problems and challenges for the region, as well as the opportunities for their resolving with the joint forces of different RCRC Societies.
In the conference participated delegations from all National Societies from the Balkan Peninsula, as well as guests and observers from the International Federation of RCRC Societies, the International Committee of Red Cross and from Italian and Quatarian RCRC Societies.
As part of the programme of the 16th Balkan Conference, the delegates had the opportunity to experience an impressive demonstration of alpine methods for evacuating people from a large building. The demonstration was prepared and executed with the support of the Mountain Rescue Service of BRC.
