190 years since the birth of Archbishop Seraphim of Sliven
In 1878 Metropolitan bishop Seraphim became a first president of the first Red Cross Society based in Sliven, Bulgaria.
Born in 1819 in Pirdop he was graduated in religious school in Svishtov. Was ordained a priest in Plovdiv and later adopted a monastic order. In 1873 he was elected and consecrated as Bishop of Sliven. Archbishop Seraphim is famous in the activity in defense of his congregation during the April uprising. Actively support the Russian troops during the liberation war. After the Liberation, he became the first mayor of Sliven. He died on August 11, 1896 and is buried in the courtyard of the St. Demetrius Cathedral.
