Turkey is home to the largest refugee population in the world, hosting more than 4 million refugees, many of them from Syria, fleeing a nine-year conflict. Thanks to European Union funding and a partnership between the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Turkish Red Crescent Society, over 1.7 million refugees living in Turkey are receiving humanitarian support through cash assistance.
This cash will support the basic needs of vulnerable households who are amongst those most exposed to infection, least able to access health care, most impacted by loss of income and now facing even more uncertainty with the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Cash assistance through the ESSN programme gives people the dignity, freedom and independence to take control of their own lives and further contribute to the communities that host them. Cash also provides the flexibility to deliver assistance as humanitarian needs evolve, including providing additional cash for refugees who risk being left behind in the current crisis.
