SOME DATES FROM THE HISTORY OF WATER RESCUE
 
  • 1901 First organized water rescue team - Ruse.
  • 1928 First professional water rescue team - Varna. Protection of the newly established Sea Baths.
  • 1964 The Water Rescue Service of the Bulgarian Red Cross (SJC) is established
  • 1967 SJC at the Bulgarian Red Cross becomes a member of the International Federation of Water Rescue FIS (Federation Internationale de Souvetage). First participation in a world championship. First world title - Dimitar Statev.
  • 1970 Varna hosts the World Cup and the FIS General Assembly. Men's and women's team championships. World champions - Valya Antonova and Julian Rusev.
  • 1972 France - World Water Rescue Championship. Men's Team Champion Title. Julian Rusev is the world champion for the second time.
  • 1973 The Central School of Water Rescue of the Bulgarian Red Cross is established in the town of Sozopol.
  • 1975 Varna - First meeting of the League of the Red Cross and Red Crescent on water rescue.
  • 1981 Sofia hosts the World Cup and the FIS General Assembly. Men's and women's team championships. Individual champions - Stoyan Andonov and Emilia Yurukova.
  • 1983 Warsaw - World Water Rescue Championship. Women's team title and second place for men. Individual champion - Teodora Tomova.
  • 1987 First International Course for Water Rescue Instructors at the Central School of Water Rescue in Sozopol.
  • 1994 With the signing of the constitution of the International Life Saving Federation ILS (International Life Saving), the existing two different and independent federations FIS (Federation Internationale de Souvetage), WLS (World Life Saving) are united. Bulgaria is a co-founder. Prof. Stoyan Saev was elected a member of the board and vice president of the European branch of the federation.
  • 1996 The Training and Methodological Center for Water Rescue in the town of Sozopol has been approved as a training base of the International Federation for Water Rescue.
  • 2002 Burgas and Sozopol - hosts of the European Water Rescue Championship for boys and girls. Team ranking for youth - third place, individual awards - one gold, six silver and three bronze.
  • 2003 Switzerland - ILSE (International Life Saving Federation of Europe) General Assembly. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Todor Popov has been elected a member of the ILSE Board of Directors. Teodora Tomova was elected a member of the rescue commission.
  • 2008 Berlin - ILSE (International Life Saving Federation of Europe) General Assembly. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Todor Popov has been re-elected as a member of the Board of Directors of ILSE. Our representatives to the ILSE commissions - Teodora Tomova in the rescue committee, Stoyan Andonov in the education committee, Natalia Stoyanova in the sports committee.
