There are millions of people in the world who live far from their native places. Some leave home voluntarily and go to foreign countries in search of a better life, while others are forced to separate from their families to escape persecution, civil war or violence. Although invisible, refugees and migrants are also present in our society.
There is a major difference between refugees and migrants. The 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees defines a refugee as a person who, "on reasonable grounds of persecution on grounds of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of which he or she is a national and not he may enjoy the protection of that country, or he does not wish to enjoy such protection because of these fears ... ”.
Unlike immigrants, who voluntarily leave their homelands to find personal fulfillment in other countries, refugees are forced to leave because of the threat to their lives and freedom. Through its programs and activities, the Bulgarian Red Cross seeks to facilitate the social and economic integration of refugees in Bulgaria, to prevent the isolation of migrants and to help form positive public attitudes towards these two groups in Bulgarian society. In accordance with the Red Cross principles of humanity and impartiality, the BRC supports the most vulnerable groups among refugees and migrants and actively works for their social protection.
Annually, the Bulgarian Red Cross provides assistance and a wide range of social services to about 1,300 foreigners, mostly persons with refugee or humanitarian status.
