Improving the sustainability of the National Tuberculosis Program

The Bulgarian Red Cross is carrying out a task (project) for providing services for prevention and control of tuberculosis to key affected groups of the population (refugees and migrants, concentrated in the reception centers of SAR and the homes for temporary accommodation of foreigners at the Ministry of Interior)

Duration of the project : 01.01.-30.09.2018

Basic activities:
  • Conducting interviews and completing surveys to establish baseline data on tuberculosis risk
  • Conducting information sessions for tuberculosis prevention
  • Motivation of persons at risk of disease to seek treatment in specialized institutions
  • Conducting a Mantoux skin test, directing suspicious and, if necessary, accompanying to a medical institution and translation
  • Accompanying at-risk persons from the target groups to the medical establishments for diagnosis and treatment
  • Assistance in searching for contact persons, as well as assistance in conducting and monitoring the necessary chemoprophylaxis
  • Assistance of medical institutions in conducting mass fluorography in compact refugee communities
  • Training of key staff from the refugee / migrant community to establish trust with beneficiaries in the field, in order to overcome stigma and discrimination

Expected results:
  • Number of persons from the target group covered by tuberculosis risk screening through a survey - 1100
  • Number and percentage of people in the target group who were screened by a survey and showed a risk of tuberculosis who received a medical examination through a tuberculin skin test - at least 80% of those who showed a risk, but not less than 330
  • Percentage of people from the target group, contact of TB patients who received a medical examination by tuberculin skin test - at least 90%
