Messages against Ebola

The IFRC / CP has launched an international campaign to help fight Ebola, an epidemic that has affected thousands in West Africa and left profound effects on entire communities and nations.

The goal of the campaign is to reduce fear and create a society of global support. The ICRC warns that indifference and silence are the greatest enemies in the fight against Ebola. It is believed that medical equipment is no longer enough, that familiar practices need to change and words are the best way to achieve these goals.

Consistency is needed
The leaders of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have called for continued action in the fight against Ebola and for empathy with the people of West Africa.

"We are at a crossroads," said ICRC Director-General Yves Dacord. "One way ahead is stable international solidarity and more efforts by local volunteers and health workers. Only in this way will we reduce the spread of the disease and restore the communities affected by Ebola, but if we choose the path of reconciliation, we will face a silent disaster that will not only hinder the recovery of affected communities, but also threaten our progress. achieved so far, "warns Yves Dacord.

Together we can stop Ebola
The campaign started with parallel media events in Europe and West Africa.

"Let's use the power of words to clear up misunderstandings, promote dialogue, defeat opposition, promote behavior change and reduce new cases to 0," said Elhaj AC, secretary general of the ICRC.
One of the most important factors in reducing the number of cases in the last year is the reduction of dangerous funeral practices in which bereaved relatives are in contact with the bodies of the deceased. In some places, this unfortunately continues. In the countries most affected by Ebola, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, there are still cases in which municipal authorities refuse to take measures to protect public health and even attacks on those who do so.

Mr. Si also said: "Our words and actions will bring change. Through them we will achieve trust and sustainability. The words will destroy the stigma on health workers and survivors, they will teach communities solidarity and declare to the world: "We will not betray you and together we will defeat Ebola!"
