History

The International Festival of Red Cross and Health Films was held for the first time in 1965 in Varna in one of the central cinemas of the city as a modest international review of Red Cross and health films to mark the 80th anniversary of the Bulgarian Red Cross. The review lasts one week and features 53 short and medium-length health and Red Cross films from 16 countries. The presented works were evaluated by an international jury. Most of them are produced by national Red Cross societies and health education organizations.

Red Cross members, health professionals and filmmakers have come up with the idea of making the review an international festival. It was decided to be held every two years and to include TV and feature films with a health and humanitarian focus.

Organized by the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Red Cross, the Festival is supported by the Federation (then the League) of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the World Health Organization and the UNESCO. He was recognized as category "A" by the FMAF (International Federation of Film Producers' Associations) and SIDALK (International Organization of Film Critics). In the same category are the festivals in Cannes, Venice, San Sebastian and others.

The festival is held in 4 categories:
  • A - Red Cross films;
  • B - Short films for healthcare, environmental protection, popular science and educational films;
  • C - Feature films on humanitarian or health topics;
  • D - Television programs.

The motto of the festival is: "Through humanism to peace and friendship." The history of the festival includes 14 editions.
