Food bank

Model for food support of the needy in Bulgaria

The Food Bank is a relatively new tool for Bulgaria to combat hunger and provide food support to the vulnerable, with continuity ensured for a long period of time by stimulating community donations, support with local resources and the establishment of partnerships. Based on the active partnership of the Bulgarian Red Cross with representatives of local government, business, civic associations and the media, food banks create conditions not just for humanitarian aid, but for organizing sustainable activities that meet the long-term needs of vulnerable groups. The food banks, built by the Bulgarian Red Cross, are a reliable mechanism for attracting local businesses and the public, who donate food products and funds. The donated food is stored in a "bank" - a special warehouse where products are sorted, packaged and prepared for transportation to those in need. With the active recruitment and participation of volunteers from different age groups in the "bank" food packages or meals are prepared, which are provided directly to the target groups of vulnerable local populations.
