In connection with the implementation of the Operational Program for Food and / or Basic Material Assistance, after approved applications for funding, the Bulgarian Red Cross was appointed contractor of the component "Provision of individual food packages" under Plan 2015 and Plan 2016.

The program is funded by the Fund for European Assistance to the Most Deprived (FEPNL), and the Managing Authority for Bulgaria is the Social Assistance Agency. The local authorities and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency are involved in its implementation.

Every year, the lists of about 300,000 eligible persons are compiled by the Social Assistance Agency, and the provision of individual packages of basic food products (flour, rice, lentils, spaghetti, canned meat, canned fish, casserole, compote, jam, honey and etc.) is carried out by employees and volunteers of the Bulgarian Red Cross, in over 300 distribution points throughout the country.

This large-scale humanitarian program is very much needed for vulnerable people living in extreme poverty, and their number is constantly growing, in line with the expanding range of groups eligible for assistance. The scope and nature of the program periodically create difficulties of various kinds and require great efforts to resolve problems, but the BRC manages to mobilize its staff and about 4,000 volunteers who work diligently so that help can reach those in need in a timely manner. .
