Breaking the taboo II

"Development and testing of training methods for trainers"

Project duration: December 2009 - December 2011
Project coordinator: Austrian Red Cross
Funding: European Commission, DAPHNE III-Program 2007 - 2013, DG Justice, Freedom and Security

Research on violence against older women shows that violence and other forms of abuse often occur in the family. However, violence against older women in need of care is still taboo and even less visible to society than violence against young women.
Social and health professionals are often the only people who have access to the target group. It is therefore very important that they have the sensitivity and skills to recognize and assess problem situations, as well as the knowledge and competence to take appropriate action.
The Breaking Taboo 2 project is based on a previous Breaking the Taboo project, which showed that many health and social service providers do not have clear organizational procedures for violence against older women. Therefore, organizations working with older people need to develop standards and procedures, as well as trained staff. There is also a need to improve cooperation between organizations protecting victims of violence and social and health organizations.

Purpose:
The aim of the project is to develop a training plan for professionals working in the social health field, based on a brochure and to develop a program and conduct seminars for staff providing social and health services in the community.

Sub-goals:
1. Engaging teachers to conduct a one-day seminar on "Violence against older women - recognition and action", aimed at staff working with older people in their homes (nurses, social workers, social workers and domestic helpers);
2. Training of staff members from social and health organizations to act as advisers;
3. Development and proposal of a training module for recognizing violence against elderly women in their own homes, to be included in the basic vocational training of specialists working in nursing homes; The main products of the project will be:
  • European report, result of the research;
  • Development of a program and holding a one-day seminar on "Violence against older women - recognition and action", aimed at employees in social and health services;
  • Curriculum for the training of trainers (to act as advisors), developed in each partner language;
  • 5-day international pilot seminar.
4. Dissemination and implementation of activities in partner countries.
