In connection with the implementation of the plan for distribution of food from the intervention stocks of the European Union, in 2008 the BRC was determined by Ordinance №18 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labor and Social Policy for the organization distributing food of vulnerable citizens.
The program "Distribution of food from the intervention stocks of the European Union" is funded by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund and implemented by the State Fund "Agriculture". The local authorities and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency are involved in its implementation.
All lists of eligible persons have been prepared by the Social Assistance Agency, and the provision of the products is carried out by full-time employees and volunteers of the Bulgarian Red Cross in special distribution points.
This large-scale humanitarian program is very useful for vulnerable citizens, who become even more vulnerable in times of crisis. Its scope and nature periodically created difficulties of various kinds and required great efforts to solve the problems that arose, but the BRC managed to mobilize its staff and numerous volunteers who worked diligently for months so that help could reach people.
