The Bulgarian Red Cross is among the first organizations (already over 200) to sign the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations, developed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and guided by an Advisory Committee of 19 people, including representatives of local, national and international NGOs, UN agencies and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as well as academics, researchers and experts in the humanitarian, development, climate and environmental fields. The Bulgarian Red Cross showcased its commitment to climate change by engaging in a number of global events, amongst those:
- The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement global climate event called Planet:Red
- Code:Red – a digital alternate reality game to tackle the climate crisis.
- The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (under the motto #OnlyTogether), the Bulgarian RC promoted its activities related to mitigation of the effects of climate change, adaptation, prevention and preparedness for disaster response.
- The Bulgarian Red Cross joined the Global Campaign #СlimateСhangedMe by disseminating a strong video message and a package of communication materials via Facebook profile and Viber community to raise public awareness.
- The Bulgarian RC took part in the online event "Climate Change and Sustainability" within the Third International Congress of the Turkish Red Crescent and partners "Disasters and Sustainability - The Perspective of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Community"
The Bulgarian Red Cross follows closely the outcomes of COP 26 in light of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s five asks to the world leaders.
The organization enjoys fruitful cooperation with the National Center for Public Health and Analysis, WHO office in Bulgaria and the journal Lancet, as well as with other partners in the country.
The Lancet report is composed of 120 leading world experts from 35 academic institutions and UN agencies. On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement and in line with the 26th Conference of the Parties to Climate Change, COP26, the report discusses the implications of delayed public health actions and the health, economic and social benefits of a decisive and rapid response.
