Today at the 17th session of the General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), held in Kenya, a new President of the Federation was voted.
The highest decision-making body of the international organization elected Tadateru Konoé, President of the Japanese Red Cross for a four-year term.

Mr. Konoé has been President of the Japanese Red Cross Society since 2005, previously serving as its vice-president for fourteen years. He has also held various posts at the IFRC, the most recent being vice chairman and member of the RCRC Standing Commission. Between 1970 and 2008, Mr. Konoé has been involved with over 30 RCRC missions in different parts of the world.

Mr. Konoé replaces Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro, president of the Spanish Red Cross, who served two terms as IFRC president.
Mr. Konoé’s new term will commence on 21 November 2009.
For the first time the two main forum of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are taking place on the African continent (Nairobi, Kenya). The Bulgarian Red Cross is represented at the General Assembly of the International Federation and at the Council of Delegates by Hristo Grigorov, the President of the BRC and Dr. Sofia Stoimenova, Director General.
