Volunteers оf the Bulgarian Red Cross and Sun Lee, Political/Economic Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria visited "Dr. Petar Beron" secondary school in Bolyarovo, where they provided a total of 41 children from vulnerable social groups with activity kits. The visit was held on 08.02.2021 as part of the ‘Activities in response to COVID-19’ program, which is realized with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Global Appeal for support of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC).
A total of 2206 activity kits have been distributed national wide so far as part the program. Another 294 kits will be provided to children from socially disadvantaged families in the district of Yambol, who are also included in the ‘Hot Meal’ program of the Bulgarian Red Cross – both programs are aiming prevention of children’s drop out of school. The kits consist of a backpack, a protective mask, a children's book with information about COVID-19, a puzzle, a book with Bulgarian folk tales, a notebook, colored pencils. The aim is to encourage various creative and educational activities that are useful for children while at school or at home. By the end of the program it is planned to have a total of 2,500 kits distributed across the country.
The ‘Activities in response to COVID-19’ program aims to support over 100 000 Bulgarian citizens through a variety of activities – provision of hygiene and activity kits, establishing a hotline, psychological counseling, online training and more. Last month, as part of the program the Bulgarian Red Cross also launched the major information campaign ‘Do it for the ones you love’. It aims to promote compliance with the safety measures while combating fake news regarding the epidemic situation by providing Bulgarian citizens with reliable information and encouraging them to take care of each other.
