Due to the large scale of the damage, the BRC requested assistance from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies under the Immediate Disaster Relief Fund
The financial support that the Bulgarian Red Cross will provide to the flood-affected inhabitants of the villages of Karlovo amounts to nearly 650 000 BGN. The funds were presented following an appeal made by the Bulgarian Red Cross Committee to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies under the Immediate Disaster Relief Fund, due to the large scale of the damage in the municipality of Karlovo.
The Bulgarian Red Cross will support 5,000 people affected by the floods in the municipality of Karlovo before the onset of the winter months. 400 households /1179 people/ in the villages of Karavelovo, Slatina, Bogdan and Voinyagovo will be provided with financial support of about 800 BGN. to buy new household appliances and furniture to replace those destroyed by the floods.
"Public councils are to be established in all the places affected by the floods, which will include representatives of the affected residents, mayors and representatives of the institutions. They will draw up the lists of households that will receive direct financial support. The criteria that have been set in advance foresee that the most affected people, for whom the flooded dwelling is the main one, will be assisted. The needs and damage assessments prepared by the Social Assistance Agency will also be used," Director of the Disaster Management Directorate Yassen Slivenski told the media about the support that will be provided to the flood victims in the municipality of Karlovo. The briefing was also attended by the representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Teresa Henley, who expressed her gratitude to the Red Cross volunteers and staff after visiting the affected localities.
More than 4,400 people will receive hygiene kits with cleaning and disinfection products for flooded houses. The provision of psychosocial support to the injured residents of the villages of Karlovo continues. The Bulgarian Red Cross psychologists will not stop with the home visits to single and elderly people, people with disabilities, children and single mothers, as well as to disadvantaged people to provide assistance where needed.
Activities of the Bulgarian Red Cross related to disaster risk reduction are also foreseen. For this reason, information materials will be printed and visits of the Bulgarian Red Cross teams to educational institutions in the territory of Karlovo municipality will be planned, in order to provide training for preparedness and response to disasters, accidents and crises.
Based on a needs assessment in the affected settlements, so far the BRC has provided 1000 sleeping sets, 1000 blankets, more than 15 tons of mineral and spring water, as well as food and clothing. Over 1600 litres of disinfectants and 10 professional wet room dehumidifiers were provided. The Bulgarian Red Cross opened three temporary points in the villages of Karavelovo, Bogdan and Slatina, where food, water and other humanitarian aid is being distributed to people on the ground. The stations also provide first aid to the villagers and volunteers who help clean up the flood damage. The Voluntary Disaster and Crisis Team, the Youth Emergency Team of the Bulgarian Red Cross - Plovdiv, as well as teams from neighboring districts were involved.
