Prepared for disasters - Tetovo 2014

Under this motto on October 12, 2014 in the village of Tetovo, Rousse municipality after extensive training, the Bulgarian Red Cross together with partners in the area, which are part of the Unified Rescue System of the country, organized and conducted disaster preparedness with residents. The lesson was part of the implementation of the European project "Informed and Sustainable".

The aim of the session was for the participants to learn more about the real and possible risks that threaten them and the whole community, to learn how to better deal with them, to understand the role, opportunities and ways of working of responsible institutions, and to put into practice the “Guide for conducting disaster classes with local communities” developed under the project. The activity, which was attended by more than 150 villagers of different ages and ethnicities, aroused extremely high interest.

Family Disaster Preparedness sessions were held with all participants, after which they were divided into six working groups, where interactive sessions were held, led by representatives of the partner structures: "Information and Communication" - Regional Center 112, "Safety and Rescue" "- OD" PBZN "," First Aid "- volunteers of the Bulgarian Red Cross Ruse," Medical Care "- Emergency Center Ruse; "Psychosocial Support" - volunteers from the Bulgarian Red Cross Ruse, as well as "Disaster Management and Humanitarian Aid" - the Crisis Center of the Municipality of Ruse and the Association of Municipalities.

Volunteers of the Bulgarian Red Cross Ruse held parallel sessions with other participants from Tetovo, preparing maps of risks and most endangered places in the village, made a historical profile of the village with the main events of its establishment and a profile of villagers, including people with skills. who can help in disasters, as well as the most vulnerable groups.

At the same time, at the local school, the younger children played a computer game in which, in three disaster scenarios, they chose how to deal with such situations and how best to prepare for them. The children made their own disaster kits, gained basic knowledge of how to give first aid to an injured friend, and learned what to do in various emergencies, played out in short videos made by the French Red Cross.
At the end of the event, a practical lesson and competition was organized, in which firefighters and people from the village participated, to put out the fire and work with firefighting equipment.

The participants received useful information materials and prizes. They expressed their satisfaction with the useful and interesting occupation and the acquired knowledge. As a result of the lesson, the residents of Tetovo realized the need to prepare their family disaster plans, to prepare a family disaster kit, to learn more about how to provide first aid, the benefits of creating a local volunteer team for disaster response, as well as how rescuers and institutions work and what help they can expect in the event of a disaster.
