partners and supporters,
On May 8, millions of people around the world celebrate the International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent . This is the date of birth of the great Swiss humanist Henri Dunant - the founder of the Red Cross movement. His ideas of solidarity and mutual assistance, care for the suffering are still alive today against the background of the unprecedented global crisis and are the foundation on which 192 national societies of the Red Cross and Red Crescent operate.
More than 14 million volunteers of the Movement are at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic and with remarkable dedication and endurance have helped over 100 million people. We are proud of their efforts and we owe them our deepest respect for the humanitarian aid provided to the most vulnerable groups in society. They are a measure of the highest morality and responsibility, an illustration of the fundamental principle of our movement - voluntariness.
The Bulgarian Red Cross has been fulfilling its humanitarian mandate and its supporting role in helping the state for 144 years, protecting and assisting vulnerable groups of citizens while preserving their dignity. And in this difficult time for the whole world, the Bulgarian Red Cross once again with all its might, mobilizing all its resources - human and material, stood side by side with the institutions. Thanks to the empathy, philanthropy and nobility of the Bulgarian society, we are still continuing the large-scale campaign in support of the victims of the conflict in Ukraine. This is another humanitarian act in the face of suffering, and the success of the campaign is proof of the high social responsibility and empathy of the Bulgarians, of trust in the Bulgarian Red Cross.
Today is a great day to express our gratitude to our thousands of dedicated volunteers, to the hundreds of members and employees of the Bulgarian Red Cross, to our partners and donors, to all who believe in the power of solidarity, nobility and charity. Thank you!
